Also, Macbeth in general seems to provide a lot of histrionics in many of its adaptations.

I do agree with you that Seven Samurai is better, but I place Throne of Blood (and Ikiru) very close to it.

By the way, the literal translation of the title was Castle of the Spider's Web. I speculated in my review that the title we know it as was an attempt to make it more sensationalistic to bring in more customers.Chip Laryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00787403805554027107noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8672005424133365490.post-2527238867256295762013-06-02T10:53:41.258-04:002013-06-02T10:53:41.258-04:00I'm a fan of film adaptations of Shakespeare. ...I'm a fan of film adaptations of Shakespeare. I kind of have a thing about Shakespeare adaptations to film - if I get even a whiff of Shakespeare in a story, I'm automatically predisposed to liking it. And this one... this one is one of the best.

The overacting criticism is very fair, but as Steve says, I tend to forgive it as well. I think you're right, it's seems to be a cultural thing.

Thanks for the info on the production design and the costumes, that was interesting.siochembiohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11487373396181856763noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8672005424133365490.post-25445878587577687272013-06-02T09:57:31.700-04:002013-06-02T09:57:31.700-04:00This is my default favorite Kurosawa film in large...This is my default favorite Kurosawa film in large part because I love the story it's based on.

You're right about the overacting--that's common in a lot of Japanese films of the period, but I tend to forgive it. For me, the biggest issue is that when the two men are lost in the forest, it just goes on and on and on and eventually becomes comic.
