The one thing I learned in the convent is this: to walk the path of Jesus you must never stray from the course (i.e. call), no matter how rocky or dangerous it may be. I knew a particular nun who was killed in Brazil because she stood up to thugs in the lumber industry who were destroying the rain forest. It's a mentality that most can't understand (which is understandable), but that's what you're taught in the convent and seminary.

Beauvois was definitely doing his own retelling of The Last Supper. There's a book about what happened here. One of the monks is still alive and gave a rather interesting recounting of what happened.Kimberly J.M. Obviously, most people would have left (I would have been one), but even their reasons for staying are contradictory to their religion.

Their jobs are to spread the word of their religion and to care for others. You can't do either of those things if you are dead. While some people can serve their religion by dying for it and becoming martyrs, most can do far more good by staying alive.

To me, the director was trying to draw parallels to the similar sacrifice Jesus made in the Bible - speaking of being a religious martyr. (The Last Supper scene was to drive this home.) The film did make me wonder what the real story was with these men; if they even had any debates like this or if they were oblivious to their danger.Chip Laryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00787403805554027107noreply@blogger.com
