It is the production which is the star here. Such a grand set! It is like the Titanic of 1935.
Maybe there ought to be an Oscar for best villain. Ín that case Charles Laughton would sweep the table. What a mean SOB!
Great review Kim.
TSorensenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12208153011927807857noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8672005424133365490.post-81173596536545555582010-10-22T17:19:01.450-04:002010-10-22T17:19:01.450-04:00Neat that you have a personal connection to this f...Neat that you have a personal connection to this film. Gable is an American icon, so we overlook his smarminess (see Gone with the Wind, LOL). I agree, Bligh got hosed in this film.Kimberly J.M. Gable is almost too slick, creepy even to engage. Despites Laughton's magnificent performance, you still end up sympathising with him somehow. (Well, perhaps I just don't get the rather smarmy Gable persona). And of course, it is a historical travesty against Bligh, (but when did that spoil a good film) (OK, Braveheart, point taken, except tht's not a good film)
But, those faults accepted, a good one (You know, I'd even forgotten it was B&W..)
(And ok, I can hear you shouting 'Richard III' in regard to gross historical betrayals of truth..)
RayAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8672005424133365490.post-59978822169942175512010-10-07T01:39:26.845-04:002010-10-07T01:39:26.845-04:00It is one of lovely film of 1935.
