I like your explanation to it. It does make sense. Though I do not like it when directors go out of their way to deliberately make an arty movie. They rarely hold up. The Bitter Tea of General Yen is good though on its own and then I do not really care that Capra made it.
Sometimes I get the feeling that China in the thirties was the equivalent of modern day Afghanistan. Haven't heard Capracorn in awhile, LOL, but I remember thinking the same thing when I studied him in my film classes. Sometimes his do-gooder films push me over the edge, but I think it's just cynicism. Glad you liked the post.Kimberly J.M. I'm not big on Capracorn, but don't deny he was very good at it.
General Yen is atmospheric, lovely to look at, and sexy in a dangerous way (love the pre-Code era for that alone). And then there's Barbara Stanwyck, around which everything else revolves, slowly surrendering to the charming/cruel warlord. Capra didn't do badly at all a la von Sternberg...
Enjoyed this post immensely, Kim.The Lady Evehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11963115499930520653noreply@blogger.com
