What I liked about Gillian Anderson is that she put on an act of being together - and all the while sneaking booze - and then gradually she begins to disintegrate. I was sobbing at the end. That "annoying Southern belle" thing you referenced having to get used too, i never got used to, wasn't my cup of tea LOL. Everybody else was great, and as a huge On the Waterfront fan it was cool to see actors from that movie also in this earlier movie. Brando was awesome, Kim Hunter was great as well, and as with Waterfront Kazan again has a very good grasp of realistic atmosphere. But Leigh being the central figure ensures that i will not gladly revisit this movie in the future. Also as with most play-to-movie adaptations, at various points of the movie you become jarringly aware of the fact that it WAS a play - a little off-putting.Bobbynoreply@blogger.com
