I am so looking forward to finally doing Ninotchka because it's my favorite Garbo film.

As for Thomas Mitchell, he had a great 1939--he could have been nominated for three different films.Kimberly J.M. It's one of the films highlighted in "Majestic Hollywood, the Greatest Films of 1939," which my daughter got me for Christmas. One of my goals for the year is to watch all 50 films highlighted in the book, so this is one I'll definitely be getting to in the next few months.

As for Thomas Mitchell, he also could have been nominated for his portrayal of Mr. O'Hara in "Gone with the Wind." I often wondered why he wasn't---then I realized, he had been nominated (and received) for "Stagecoach." 1939 was definitely a banner year for him.Patti https://www.blogger.com/profile/12931836399684850729noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8672005424133365490.post-33162090002292285262014-02-28T12:48:38.076-05:002014-02-28T12:48:38.076-05:00Interesting point, Kevin. However, I must say that I did not recognize Dent from the Stooges, as I was never a big fan and only even remember what Moe and Curly look like--I can't remember the other Stooge's name. The opening scene shows Vernon Dent as a sea captain and the little girl got very excited as she recognized him from the The Three Stooges. She had no idea who Cary Grant, Rita Hayworth or Jean Arthur were but she sure recognized Vernon Dent.

So true of much of film history where genres initially thought of as disposable, such as horror movies, film noir or slapstick comedy, is better known today than other films or genres that were much more respectable at the time they were made.

Not a slight against the marvelous Grant, Arthur or Hayworth, or ONLY ANGELS HAVE WINGS which I really enjoy. Just an observation. Still, even if I didn't have Grant or Arthur under contract I would still want my film to be well represented with Academy nods.Kimberly J.M. Regarding Grant and Arthur not being rewarded by the Academy for their acting, a lot of that had to do with each of them bucking the Hollywood studio system and being free agents for a large portion of their careers. It's sad that they were neglected, but that's the world of movie politics.Steven M Painterhttp://www.stevenmpainter.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8672005424133365490.post-26258129631456158642014-02-16T11:57:29.787-05:002014-02-16T11:57:29.787-05:00TS, you're right it does hold up today. Only Angels Have Wings is interesting, action packed, subtle in the right places and filled with stellar performances. I love this one.
TSorensenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12208153011927807857noreply@blogger.com
